Zev Burrows, composer (l)            Mark Chimsky, librettist/lyricist (r)

Mark Evan Chimsky (book & lyrics) and Zev Burrows (music) are a new musical theatre writing team and inaugural members of the Theatre Now National Musical Writers Group.

Introduced to one another by Carol de Giere, author of the Stephen Schwartz biography Defying Gravity, their works have been showcased and supported by numerous organizations including NYMF, Sitting Shotgun, James Madison University, the Equity Library Theater’s Summer 2020 Virtual Play Festival, The Dramatists Guild, Left Coast Theater Company, The Latest Draft, and the Boston Conservatory at Berklee for the Boston Theater Marathon.

Across their numerous musicals, they seek to create works celebrating a shared humanity with an eye towards social change, tackling subjects such as hazing and toxic masculinity in college fraternities, homophobia and the outing of a high school star quarterback, xenophobia in Elizabethan England, and expression of gender identity throughout the centuries.

Their musical The Pledge was the official selection for the 2019 Madison New Works Lab at James Madison University, where it received a two-week workshop and staged reading.

Most recently, their new musical A Broken Play was given a virtual reading through the Dramatists Guild Friday Night Footlights Reading Series.

Their short musical Albert will be produced in 2021 by the Boston Conservatory at Berklee for the 23rd Annual Boston Theater Marathon: Special Zoom Edition, and by the Left Coast Theater Company in San Francisco.

Also, Mark and Zev are thrilled to be mentioned in two recent Broadway World stories! Check them out here:
