Zev and I met in May 2017, when our friend, Carol de Giere—creator of Musical Writerzine and author of Defying Gravity: The Creative Career of Stephen Schwartz, from Godspell to Wicked —introduced us at a dinner she organized in New York City.
She was aware that I was looking for a composer to be my collaborator for Swagger, a musical about William Shakespeare, for which I had written the book and lyrics.
Carol said she knew someone who might be interested and that she’d set up a dinner where we could meet.
At dinner, Zev and I started talking and brainstorming immediately.
I asked Zev to compose the music for any lyric from Swagger to see if our visions matched.
Undaunted, Zev chose the most ambitious number in the show—the title song.
Zev created music that was a wonderful mix of classical and Broadway, with a distinct style all his own, and we started working together right after I heard it.
He completed the full score for Swagger in about eight months.
To date we’ve written four full-length musicals and three short musicals in just three-and-a half years.
Our full-length musical The Pledge has had staged readings at the Sitting Shotgun theater company in Brooklyn, New York and at the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts in Harrisonburg, Virginia, as part of James Madison University’s Madison New Works Lab.
The Pledge’s opening song, “Check the Boxes,” was chosen to be part of the New York Musical Festival in New York City, in a concert of new musical theater writers called “Breaking Ground.”
Our short musical J. and Dot tied for “Best Play” in Equity Library Theater’s Summer 2020 Virtual Play Festival.
Interestingly, before dinner ended Carol took this picture of us to “capture the moment.”
Thank you, Carol!
